Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS)
Host-based intrusion prevention systems "HIPS" is an application that works with and complements traditional anti-virus programs. The HIPS application resides on the computer and does not need continuous updates to stay ahead of new malware: however, it does use an extensive amount of system resources as it checks every file and compares them against a massive blacklist. Impairments due to the usage of system resources can include lower battery life and overall computer responsiveness.
When used in conjunction with a traditional anti-virus program HIPS lightens its impact on system resources as applications are whitelisted through the anti-virus program.
HIPS are very useful for users that will be frequently using their laptops in unsecured environments such as cafes, airports, or on a public Wi-Fi.
